Marian University McNair students present at National Conference

November 8, 2010

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Students in the Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement program at Marian University presented on Saturday, November 6 at Lake Lawn Resort in Delevan, Wisconsin. Six of the students presented posters about their research findings, and two gave oral presentations. 

The National McNair Research Conference is designed to provide undergraduate students the opportunity to explore graduate study as an obtainable option. Workshops, panel discussions and activities introduce McNair scholars to the nature of graduate study as well as provide helpful tips and suggestions in writing an effective graduate admissions application. 

The following students presented their research:

Phyllis Becker, a social work major from Beaver Dam, presented “An Analysis of Male and Females Homeless Veterans in Wisconsin.” 

Nancy Garcia, a criminal justice major from Wautoma, presented her research on “Reforming Immigration: Substantiating the need for the DREAM Act.” 

Sandra Gierach, a nursing major from Fond du Lac, presented her research on “Phenomenological Exploration of Perceived Health and Access to Health Services within the Hispanic Population.” 

Amanda Pankratz, a music education major from Horicon, orally presented her research on “Verbal Communication in Music Theory.” 

Patricia Rodenkirch, a psychology major from Fond du Lac, presented on “A Qualitative Analysis of Gender Perception related to Bereavement.” 

Theresa Sokup, a psychology major from Weyauwega, presented on “Factors Affecting the Disclosure of Sexual Abuse in Fond du Lac County – Weyauwega.” 

Annette VanStraten, a music education major from Shiocton, presented her research on “Factors Affecting Freshman participation in Music Ensembles at Marian University.” 

Bee Yang, an elementary education major from Sheboygan, presented on the “Dynamics of Effective Teaching of Hmong Students.”

This conference was coordinated by the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM) in collaboration with the Mid-America Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (MAEOPP). The conference builds on the respected legacy that the Office of Minority Student Affairs at the University of Illinois had developed in 1993.

Dominican Guitar Concert at Marian University

On November 23, 2010 at 1:30 pm Felipe Baez will perform Dominican style Classical guitar music and discuss the history of the pieces at Marian University's Dorcas Chapel. Afterwards there will be a CD signing at 2:30 pm, and Mr. Baez will offer a master class to registered participants at McNair house shortly after 3:00 pm. Space in this class is limited to the Marian community on the first come first served RSVP basis only.

Felipe Baez Auffant is a New York City based guitarist. He was born in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic, where he first began his studies and received a degree in guitar performance from the studio Dina de Educacion Nacional under Cuban Guitarist Ruben Gonzalez.

Felipe lives and works in Manhattan, where he is working on his first album and post-production sound for film by the independent Dominican director, Franciso Diaz.

Marian University student to present research at NEMASYM conference in Arizona

September 8, 2010

FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Andrea Binnebose of Campbellsport, a junior biology major at Marian University, has been selected to present her research at the NEMASYM conference at the University of Arizona in Tucson on November 11-14.

Binnebose has worked through the Ronald E. McNair Scholars program to research the “Induction of Heat Shock Protein (Hsp) in Steinernema websteri A10.” Her research examines the stress responses in insect-killing roundworms used as biocontrols for agricultural pests.Binnebose’s study addresses the increasingly global concern regarding the application of toxic chemical insecticides, and has helped to promote the use of Entomopathgenic Nematodes as an eco-friendly alternative for the control of agricultural pests.Dr. Susan Bornstein-Forst, Marian professor of Biology and Director of the McNair program at Marian University, has served as Binnebose’s mentor and will be accompanying her to Arizona.

Binnebose will receive a $1200 travel stipend to the 2010 NEMASYM conference.

NEMASYM is a National Science Foundation supported program that focuses on nematode and bacterial symbiotic relationships, and is comprised of scientific, academic, agricultural and government membership from 26 countries.

The McNair Scholars Program and the Environmental Club at Marian University THANK YOU!

With all your help and dedication, the environmental pledge drive was a great success!

With all the Marian University pledges in, our community pledged to reduce its collective CO2 emissions by 33 tons. 

Everyone should be very proud of these efforts.  Now the hard work starts!  Let’s stay true to our pledges and make a real effort to reduce our impact.
