What do McNair scholars do?
Engage in Research. Students participate in the McNair Research Experience during which they develop and conduct individual research projects under the guidance of a faculty/professional mentor. As part of the research experience, they enroll in MCN 201: Preparing for Research and MCN 401: Performing Research. More details are available on the McNair website.
Develop and deliver professional research presentations. McNair Scholars present their research at selected research symposia held at Marian University. In addition, students have the opportunity to travel to academic and professional conferences across the nation. Participation in conferences is an excellent opportunity to network with faculty and graduate students from a wide variety of institutions.
Attend graduate school preparation seminars and workshops. Students must attend graduate school seminars and/or workshops focusing on specific topics related to the graduate school application process, including how to identify graduate programs that “fit” their needs and interests, preparing for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), and how to navigate graduate school.
Visit graduate schools and meet with graduate faculty members. Students can receive funding to travel to graduate school visits. This is an opportunity for them to learn more about an institution and department as they make decisions to pursue a graduate education.
Participate in Service-Learning opportunities. The Service-Learning experience is strongly encouraged at Marian University. These experiences serve students by engaging them in the educational process, using what they learn in the classroom to solve real-life challenges in the community.

As You Prepare for a Graduate Education
I just read this blog post from the McNair Scholars Program at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I encourage McNair students at Marian University to read it and share it with other people who plan on attending graduate school.
Obviously, it is not a complete list of advices for a graduate school experience. However, I believe his points can serve many who are currently planning on movind to the same direction.

Save TRiO Programs
(June 14, 2011)
Political Leaders in Washington, D.C. are NOT Talking About TRIO
Yet, they are engaged in crucial conversations that will have a direct impact on whether any funding is available for TRIO in FY12 and beyond. Why?
- Republicans are holding legislation to raise the debt ceiling hostage unless Democrats agree to include measures in the bill to reduce the federal deficit by cutting programs important to low-income Americans.
What happens if Congress doesn’t raise the debt ceiling?
- The United States will have to choose between paying its debts and funding domestic programs like Social Security, Medicare, etc.
What can we do?
- Contact Vice President Joe Biden.
He is the White House's lead negotiator on this issue. Contact him by e-mail at (http://www.whitehouse.gov/contact/) AND by phone at (202) 456-1111. (Please note that phone lines are only staffed Monday thru Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Eastern Time.) - Contact Senator Harry Reid (D-NV).
As the Majority Leader, Senator Reid is accountable to all American citizens for action in the U.S. Senate. He is and will continue to be a key figure in this fight. He knows about TRIO. Now we need him to stand up for TRIO! Contact him by e-mail at (http://reid.senate.gov/contact/) AND by phone at (202) 224-7327. - Contact your Democratic Representatives and Senators in Congress.
Republicans have dug in their heels on this issue. So, we must focus our energies on Democratic Senators and Representatives. Contact information for all legislators is available at (http://www.contactingthecongress.org/). - Recruit five friends WHO DO NOT WORK IN TRIO to do the same!!! Remember to also engage local leaders, parents, alumni and students as well.
What is our message?
- Sample Message #1: “As a citizen, I am very concerned that you and other Democrats are not going to stand up for the low-income people you represent in deliberations on the debt ceiling. Education programs that are important to me, like the Pell Grant and TRIO, are threatened by these negotiations. If we don't educate our citizens, we will not be able to compete in the global economy.”
- Sample Message #2: “I am very concerned that the interests of our most vulnerable citizens will be ignored in the debt ceiling debate. Don't trade the futures of the low-income students and families who rely on programs like TRIO and Pell in the name of fiscal responsibility. Cutting such programs would actually be fiscally irresponsible. Without an educated population, our economy will not survive. We, as citizens, are counting on you to protect our TRIO programs and the students and families served by them.”
For more information about this issue, please click here.
If you have any specific questions regarding this important request, please contact Heather Valentine or Kimberly Jones at the Council for Opportunity in Education by phone at (202) 347-7430 or via e-mail at (heather.valentine@coenet.us) and (kimberly.jones@coenet.us).

The McNair Scholars Program at Marian University invites students to prepare for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) through a series of formal or informal instruction and study sessions. The workshop will be led by Teri Passow, Program Coordinator of the McNair Program.
Students enrolling in the workshop will be charged $225 for the entire session; this includes classroom instruction, all course materials (class text, skills review text, CD-ROM study aide), and pre- and post-course GRE assessments to help students gauge their progress and standing. While this may be a significant amount of money for many of our students, standard fees for these types of programs are typically priced at $500 or higher, making this a great opportunity.

Professional Conduct and Employee Rights
We’re on the home stretch, just a couple more weeks to go!
But if you need a break from studying, from working, or just feel a little frazzled, we are very excited to welcome Kathleen Rinehart, the Marian University Legal Counsel, to speak on behalf of our program.
Kathleen Rinehart will be speaking tomorrow,
April 27th at 2:30 PM in T205.
Ms. Rinehart will speak about the ever important issue of conduct and professionalism in the workplace. For those of you about to graduate or even to embark on a new off-site research project, this is a can’t miss presentation!
Most of us know that we can’t copy/paste swaths from Wikipedia into our papers, or that we can’t cheat on tests. But do we know what comes next? What happens if your boss asks you to perform a task that is clearly immoral? What if you are consistently belittled by a coworker and don’t know how to stand up for your rights? What happens if another lab worker blatantly steals your work and pawns it off as his own?
…if you come armed with questions, there’s a good chance you’ll get the answers.
In the past, we’ve had paltry attendance at Renaissance Scholar events among our most important group… our Scholars. Maybe you don’t realize, but these events are put forth to help you become better, more knowledgeable human beings.
So keep that in mind when choosing whether or not to attend the program.
And good luck on finals!

Put First Things First
"Things which matter most must never be at the mercy of things which matter least."
--Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
"Putting first things first means doing to the most important things in life. It means being clear about your priorities and acting on them. Many people unconsciously fall into the trap of getting caught up in non-important things. They neglect the larger life priorities until it becomes too late to act on them."
--Celestine Chua

Coming soon to Marian University
TRiO Day Celebration
Marian University TRiO programs – Student Support Services (SSS) and McNair Scholars Program – will participate in National TRiO Day on Monday, February 28, 2011. Historically, the TRiO Day Celebration is a nationwide community service initiative. In honor of this special day, these two programs will conduct a series of activities that will bring more awareness of TRiO services available to Marian University students.
TRiO programs are funded through the U.S. Department of Education to serve students who meet one or more of the eligibility criteria: first-generation, low-income, documented disability and/or a member of a group underrepresented in graduate education. They were originally established by the federal government in 1965 to ensure equal educational opportunity for all Americans, regardless of race, ethnic background, or economic circumstance.
At this point, TRiO Programs at Marian University include Student Support Services (SSS) and the McNair Scholars Program.
